NO FUE UN SUEÑO

The first space we inhabit is our body, our body is our home. The first moment of the relationship between the human being and the world —in the aesthetic sense—
is when it becomes aware of the world’s existence through the body and senses.
’No fue un sueño’ talks about women who have been victims of male violence and are now raising their voices from their own trenches through visual art, teaching, psychology, music, and dance. I portray women’s bodily autonomy over their bodies as a free and safe space. I have made portraits in different cities in Mexico. I work with young women because I am interested in seeing their perspective on male violence, contrasting it with the perspective of my own generation. We are in times of revolution, we are breaking that social construct fabricated by society. We have to get rid of those absurd ideas that are considered absolute of how a woman should behave to have the right to be visible and respected, to speak directly and clearly about what has made her feel so uncomfortable. I think, one way to change the opinion of those who discredit women’s rights is to break the fear of women talking about what they have felt subjected to by the tyranny of the patriarchal system. I believe that this collective voice would produce a positive effect on the new generations of women to come.
